The review also discusses the issues of antibacterial resistance broken down for each major groups of antibacterial agents. Essential reading for scientists in the field.

The review introduces the β-lactam compounds as potent serine proteinase inhibitors and describes their antibacterial mode of action, their role in the treatment of some bacterial antibiotic resistance in combination with other β-lactams, and their emergence as potent inhibitors ofelastase.

11. Gordeev MF, Gordon EM, Patel DV: Solid-phase synthesis of β-sultams. JOrg Chem (1997) 62:8177-8181. An adaptation of the ketene-imine cyloaddition to ketenes and sulfenes. The ability to generate and synthetically modify the extremely sensitive β-sultams is quite an achievement.

Combinatorial adaptation of the powerful, high-yielding Ugi fourcomponent condensation. The method is easily adaptable to obtain libraries of monocyclic β-lactams possessing a wide variety of substituents.

An excellent article with an even better introduction. Complex molecules were generated by well-designed, short synthetic routes.
