Projection of an immunological self shadow within the thymus by the aire protein

This is the first report to describe the phenotype of Aire-deficient mice, with interesting data showing that Aire regulates the expression of a variety of tissue-specific genes in MECs. This gives a clear insight into the tolerance defects in these animals and correlates well with the reported autoimmune disease progression.
