This paper shows that plasma ghrelin, which is a powerful orexic agent, is increased after weight loss and this may explain why weight gain occurs post-dieting. In contrast, gastric bypass leads to a fall in ghrehlin.

The results show that the overconsumption of sugar-containing beverages results in weight gain.
