Energy expenditure in response to overfeeding did not differ in response to overfeeding with fat or carbohydrate.

This paper shows that plasma ghrelin, which is a powerful orexic agent, is increased after weight loss and this may explain why weight gain occurs post-dieting. In contrast, gastric bypass leads to a fall in ghrehlin.

Sucrose compared with artificial sweeteners: different effects on ad libitum food intake and body weight after 10 wk of supplementation in overweight subjects. Am J Clin Nutr 2002; 76:721-729. This is an interesting study as there has long been a controversy as to whether overweight individuals should be encouraged to use artificial sweeteners in place of sugar. The results show that the overconsumption of sugar-containing beverages results in weight gain.
