Chen and Dormer (ref. 9a) attempted to obtain 1-benzyl-2-methylindole starting from (o-bromophenyl)acetone and benzylamine. The indole was expected to be achieved by a Cu-catalyzed intermolecular amination followed by an intramolecular ring closure. However, this sequence did not give the expected indole and the applied conditions afforded 2-methylbenzofuran exclusively
