In our hands, decarboxylation (conditions described in ref. 7a) of benzo[è]furan-2,3-dicarboxylic acid gave benzo[b]furan as the main product, (b) The generation of 3-metalated benzo[b]furan via a halogen exchange reaction in 3-bromobenzo[b]furan results in fragmentation with the production of 2-hydroxyphenylacetylene if the reaction temperature is above - 115 °C. However, at this reaction temperature the reaction is slow and most of the starting material is recovered
