It is most probable, given also the fitting of the UV and fluorescence data (vide infra), that in the former case the anion is not involved in direct complexation with the NH groups, but rather that it is just nesting in the proximity of the lower rim (as a result of electrostatic interaction with the included n-butylammonium group), and that it thus forms what has been termed an 'ion-paired complex' (see Ref. 1 ).
