When solutions of 1·DCl (prepared as described in the Experimental Section under the sub-heading General procedure for the formation of the ammonium salt monomers) in D2O-free CD2Cl2 (dispensed out of a freshly-opened bottle) were used, the diffusion coefficients (Table 2) were consistently found to be slightly higher than those observed for 1-DC1 obtained by in situ addition of DC1/D2O (see ref, 31, Furthermore, under these conditions, 1H NMR integration (data not shown) displayed an average decrease ≈ 6, in the percentages of threading. These observations indicate that in the absence of D2O, both the lack of ion solvation and greater extent of ion-pairing result in a modest but detectable decrease in the self-assembly
