Outstanding position piece emphasizing the synergistic interaction between major causative factors in AD (amyloid-β peptid. Aβ) and VCI (vascular insufficiency). Aβ, in addition to its well known toxic effects on brain cells, induces vascular insufficiency that can exacerbate the deleterious effects of this compound. In addition, vascular insufficiency in VCI can increase Aβ and exacerbate its effects. Thus the effects of Aβ in vascular insufficiency, cerebral ischemia and AD can result in increased cognitive impairment.
