The evolution of the spin densities along the reaction pathway (ESI) shows that one electron is transferred from the substrate to tHp, with the metal playing an indirect role. The resulting benzyl radical is antiferromagnetically coupled with the metal The reactivity of the oxo ligand in Mn(O)(tHp)(OH) has been reported by us.
