    • The role of atmospheric oxygen as a catalytic oxidant or oxidation promoter cannot be ruled out on the basis of our mechanistic studies. Furthermore, such a possibility is supported by the observations of Chen and co-workers,8 who studied this process concurrently and independently. Using mass-spectrometric monitoring of the reaction mixtures, these investigators found that the pyridines A were formed only when the reaction vessels were open to the atmosphere. Due to the significance of biological NADH oxidation by molecular oxygen, a reaction catalyzed by NADH oxidases Nox, further work in collaboration with Chen's group is underway to clarify the role of oxygen in these reactions
