    • Evidence for macromolecular protein rings in the absence of bulk water
    • First report to demonstrate the power of an ion mobility-mass spectrometry approach for studying the biophysics of large protein complexes in the absence of bulk water. Data are presented which indicate that a small percentage of TRAP ions (an 11-member protein complex, having an intact molecular mass in excess of 90 kDa) retain their native topology in the gas-phase. Addition of stabilizing ligands, either Trp alone or Trp and RNA, can be used to prevent this collapse. Ion activation experiments are also performed and demonstrate that the topology of the gas-phase complexes can be manipulated by increasing their internal energy.
