    • A word of caution must be given, however, for data at these lowest injection energies. Below 30 or 40 eV injection energy, discrimination against larger species can occur. This happens due to collisional scattering of the species trying to enter the cell from the ion funnel; the larger the cross section of the species, the more the scatter and the lower the transmission. Hence, while the trend toward higher-order oligomers most probably continues below 60 eV, the quantitative distribution of components in the peaks becomes less certain. This is unfortunate because, as the injection energy is lowered, less collisional dissociation or conformational annealing occurs, and hence, a more accurate picture emerges of the oligomer distribution in solution. On balance, considering all of the evidence, the nominal -2 monomer peak being sprayed from solution is dominated by dimer and trimer.

    • 44a was used to generate the cross sections reported here. The projection method gives values about 10% smaller. The experimental data fall between the determinations of the two methods, but both give relative cross sections in excellent agreement with experiment.
