To estimate the energy barriers, the energy difference (per dimer) between the symmetric [parallel dimer, p(2×1) configuration (highest energy)] and the asymmetric p(2×1) is taken to be 120meV. 100meV is added to account for the 50meV exchange energy with each nearest neighbor [K. Inoue, Phys. Rev. B PRBMDO 0163-1829 49, R14774 (1994)]. The value used for the local excitation is 11meV [corresponding to an effective temperature on the order of 100K, as in Ref.] at the position of the tip, with a decay length of 40 lattice units.
