    • [12c] Prior to insertion of the x-olefin, hydrogens beta to the Pd attached to the ultimate norbornene unit of the growing polynorbornene chain are unavailable for elimination. All β-hydrogens are either anti to the Pd center or attached to bridgehead carbons in the norbornene unit. Elimination of a β-hydrogen from a bridgehead position would form a bridgehead double bond and violate Bredt's rule. A β-hydrogen anti to Pd is improperly oriented for elimination and it is extremely unlikely that it would occur.
