Nanoscale images (STM) of fluorinated SWNTs reveal a banded structure that indicates broad continuous regions of fluorination terminating in bands orthogonal to the tube axis. Although theoretical calculations indicated that the energy differences between the 1,2- and 1,4-isomers are small at all levels of fluorination, the 1,4-isomer was found to be slightly more stable.
