Meals with similar energy densities but rich in protein, fat, carbohydrate, or alcohol have different effects on energy expenditure and substrate metabolism but not on appetite and energy intake
-
Raben A, Agerholm-Larsen L, Flint A, et al. Meals with similar energy densities but rich in protein, fat, carbohydrate, or alcohol have different effects on energy expenditure and substrate metabolism but not on appetite and energy intake. Am J Clin Nutr 2003; 77:1-100. A carefully controlled study investigating the effects of high-protein, fat, carbohydrate and alcohol meals on subsequent intake, appetite, energy expenditure and hormone concentrations. No differential effects of any high macronutrient containing preloads on subsequent appetite or food intake were observed, which does not support the hierarchy of macronutrient effects on satiety previously noted.

Effects of fat digestion on appetite, APD motility, and gut hormones in response to duodenal fat infusion in humans

Feinle C, O'Donovan D, Doran S, et al. Effects of fat digestion on appetite, APD motility, and gut hormones in response to duodenal fat infusion in humans. Am J Physiol 2003; 284:G798-G807. Lipid emulsions infused directly into the upper small intestine led to changes in gastrointestinal motility and plasma hormone levels, and appetite. Prevention of the normal digestion of the fat through the use of a lipase inhibitor attenuated all of these responses.

Diacylglycerols affect substrate oxidation and appetite in humans
-
Kamphuis MMJW, Mela DJ, Westerterp-Plantenga MS. Diacylglycerols affect substrate oxidation and appetite in humans. Am J Clin Nutr 2003; 77:1133-1139. Volunteers were fed isoenergetic diets over a 36 h stay in a respiration chamber; one diet was manipulated to contain 40% of its fat content as diacylglycerol. Feelings of hunger were lower and fullness higher during the last 12 h of the stay in the chamber, possibly relating to observed increases in fat oxidation.

-
Castiglione KE, Read NW, French SJ. Adaptation to high-fat diet accelerates emptying of fat but not carbohydrate test meals in humans. Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 2002; 282:R366-R371. Gastric emptying rate of high-fat and high-carbohydrate test meals was measured before and after a 2-week high-fat diet. Emptying of the high-fat test meal was accelerated following the diet confirming previous findings. Carbohydrate emptying, however, was unchanged, suggesting a nutrient specific adaptive response of the gastrointestinal tract to dietary fat.

Behavioral, plasma, and calorimetric changes related to food texture modification in men

Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 2002; 282:R1501-1511. The authors examined the influence that textural properties of food have on appetite, palatability, physiological consequences of eating and eating behaviour. Texture modification was found to have effects upon eating patterns, palatability and metabolic management of the ingested food.

Dietary fat content affects energy intake and weight gain independent of diet caloric density in rats
-
Warwick ZS, Synowski SJ, Bell KR. Dietary fat content affects energy intake and weight gain independent of diet caloric density in rats. Physiol Behav 2002; 77:85-90. This study examined the effect of caloric density, physical form and availability of the diet on the intake of high-fat or high-carbohydrate diets in rats. A high-fat diet was found to increase daily energy intake and weight gain by a mechanism that was partly independent of caloric density.

Dietary fat dose dependently increases spontaneous caloric intake in rat
-
Warwick ZS. Dietary fat dose dependently increases spontaneous caloric intake in rat. Obes Res 2003; 11:859-864. The author characterized a dose-response relationship between fat to carbohydrate ratio and spontaneous energy intake in rats. A differential effect of macronutrient upon the postingestive responses to food consumption was observed and suggested that attention be addressed toward investigating macronutrient specific controls of feeding.

Enhanced resting activity of the oral somatosensory cortex in obese subjects
-
Wang GJ, Volkow ND, Felder C, et al. Enhanced resting activity of the oral somatosensory cortex in obese subjects. Neuroreport 2002; 13:1151-1155. This paper presents data illustrating that obese individuals have greater activity in brain regions where sensation to the mouth, lips and tongue are located, suggesting that they may be more sensitive to the rewarding effects of palatable food.

Plasma cholecystokinin is associated with subjective measures of satiety in women
-
Burton-Freeman B, Davis PA, Schneeman BO. Plasma cholecystokinin is associated with subjective measures of satiety in women. Am J Clin Nutr 2002; 76:659-667. In a controlled study, the authors examined the effects of adding fibre or fat to a low-fibre, low-fat meal in terms of satiety hormone release and appetite in healthy men and women. Women demonstrated enhanced satiety when either fat or fibre was added to the meal; no such effects were observed in men.
