c) A possible explanation for the role of the diene is that the catalyst is protected during the reaction by its coordination. During the cycloisomerization of enynes in closely related conditions, in the presence of carboxylic acid at a higher temperature, the catalyst [RuCl-(cod)(Cp*)] initially produces ruthenium hydride species.(ref. [30]) The coordination of the diene can prevent this protonation of the ruthenium site.
