    • A third contribution to friction arises in lubricated sliding from the viscous drag force, F = ηAυ/D, where η is the viscosity, υ is the sliding velocity, and D is the gap or film thickness. For Newtonian liquids (i.e., constant η, implying low L, D > 1 - 10 nm) F is proportional to A at constant υ and D; but in practice both D and η usually depend on L.
