Our criterion for linearity was that the response is directly proportional to the input, that it depends only on the frequency but not on the amplitude of deformation, and that a sinusoidal input produced a sinusoidal or nearly sinusoidal response. Depending on the film properties and system geometry, the response may be linear even for large strains (>1) as was found to be the case here for the thicker films undergoing lateral shear (Figure 8A).
