    • 2+ ATPase isoform 2 alters its membrane targeting
    • Together with Francesconi and Duvoisin (2002) [5], Karim-Jimenez et al. (2000) [6], Chuang and Sung (1998) [7] and Takeda et al. (2003) [8], this paper shows that apical trafficking signals might be present in the cytosolic domains of integral membrane proteins. This expands the list of apical targeting sequences to include glycosylation, lipid rafts, transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. This and other papers [6,14-17] also indicate that PDZ-binding motifs do not always function as apical targeting or retention signals.

    • Generation of EBP50/NHERF1-null mice clearly demonstrates a function for apical membrane PDZ proteins in the recruitment and/or retention of proteins at the apical cell surface. Together with Kocher et al. (2003) [62], this paper provides evidence that these related PDZ proteins are likely to have overlapping but distinct functions in polarized cells.
