Alignments, phylogenetic analysis, and the identification of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) reveal that the F-box superfamily represents 2.7% of the predicted genes in Arabidopsis, making it one of the largest gene families described to date in plants.

Science 2002, 295:2073-2076. SGT1 interacts with RAR1 in vivo and also forms complexes with SCF E3 ligase and COP9 signalosome subunits. Single-cell silencing of SGT1 results in the loss of R-gene-dependent disease resistance. SGT1 interacts with RAR1 in vivo and forms complexes with SCF E3 ligase and COP9 signalosome subunits. This finding may indicate a potential link between disease resistance and ubiquitination.

The authors demonstrate the in vivo and in vitro association of COP9 with multiple cullins. COP9 promotes cleavage of the ubiquitin-like protein NEDD8 from CUL1.
