    • The metastable rare gas atoms have the following energies: He*=20 eV, Ne*=17eV, Ar*=12 eV, Kr*=10 eV, and Xe*=8 eV. Their natural lifetimes are ≥20 ms, which is much longer than their typical flight times.

    • When the laser frequency is detuned above the atomic resonance, the light induces an electric dipole moment in the atoms.
