50. This may reflect the smaller lattice area of Pd(111) compared to Au(111 ). The predominant crystalline orientation of evaporated Pd is (111) and it has a hexagonal cell with a lattice parameter of 0.476 nm. Au(111) is hexagonal with a lattice parameter of 0.499 nm. Several examples obtained for alkanethiols on Au(111), Au(110), and Au(100) suggest that alkyl chains vary their tilt angle to maximize chain-to-chain interactions.
