Potent analgesic effects of GDNF in neuropathic pain states

This study describes the analgesic effects of GDNF in two animal models of neuropathic pain, demonstrating its ability to reverse an established neuropathy. GDNF also reduces ectopic discharges in damaged sensory neurons, which is thought to be a result of its regulation of several sodium channel subunits

Uninjured C-fiber nociceptors develop spontaneous activity and alpha-adrenergic sensitivity following L6 spinal nerve ligation in monkey
-
This study demonstrates the onset of spontaneous activity in spared C fibre afferents following damage to their neighbours. This low-level barrage may be critical in maintaining some aspects of neuropathy, such as thermal hyperalgesia

A phase II trial of nerve growth factor for sensory neuropathy associated with HIV infection. AIDS Clinical Trials Group Team 291
-
[Published erratum appears in Neurology 2000, 55:162.] A recent clinical trial showing positive effects of NGF treatment on HIV-associated painful neuropathy. Although NGF treatment resulted in injection-site hyperalgesia in some patients (thus unblinding these subjects), subsequent removal of these from the outcome measure analysis still left a significant positive effect on pain
