Dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E after myocardial infarction: Results of the GISSI-Prevenzione trial

102 Gruppo Italiano per lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell'Infarto miocardico. Dietary supplementation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E after myocardial infarction: results of the GISSI-Prevenzione trial. Lancet 1999; 354:447-455. This is a report of a large controlled prospective trial of a low dose of n-3 fatty acids after an acute myocardial infarction. An important reduction in total and cardiovascular mortality with n-3 fatty acids on top of currently used medications was reported. In this study, no effect of vitamin E, either alone or in addition to n-3 fatty acids, was found.

Randomized trial of estrogen plus progestin for secondary prevention of coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women. Heart and Estrogen/ progestin Replacement Study (HERS) Research Group
-
108 Hulley S, Grady D, Bush T, Furberg C, Herrington D, Riggs B, Vittinghoff E. Randomized trial of estrogen plus progestin for secondary prevention of coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women. Heart and Estrogen/ progestin Replacement Study (HERS) Research Group. JAMA 1998; 280:605-613. This is the first prospective randomized placebo-controlled trial of hormone replacement therapy on total and cardiovascular mortality in postmenopausal women. During an average follow up of 4,1 years, treatment with oral conjugated equine oestrogen plus medroxyprogesterone acetate did not reduce the overall rate of coronary heart disease events in postmenopausal women with established coronary disease. The treatment did increase the rate of thromboembolic events. This was interpreted as being due to some increase in thrombotic deaths and events caused by oestrogens. It is still possible that an antiatherogenic effect of oestrogen was present, but missed during the relatively short follow up of the study.
