This is a key paper demonstrating that calreticulin, an endoplasmic reticulum as well as an integrin α cytoplasmic domain binding protein is essential for integrin-mediated cell adhesion and calcium signaling. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1998, 95:4374-4379. This novel finding implicates ILK in the regulation of the Wnt signaling pathway. It shows dramatic nuclear translocation of β-catenin by ILK overexpression, leading to epithelial-mesenchymal conversion.
