    • The faceted particle shape could be important for efficient enhancement because the sharp points and edges can act as a "lightning rod" to concentrate the incident electromagnetic field. Also, sharp points, atomic clusters, and adatoms may function as active sites on the particle surface. These special sites are believed to be responsible for chemical Raman enhancement via a resonant charge-transfer process. In comparison with particle size, particle shape and active sites are two factors that are still not well understood.
