of outstanding interest. This report analyses of 16 volunteers who were immunized with recombinant HIV gp120 subunit vaccines and later became infected with HIV. Comparison of vaccinees with appropriate controls revealed no differences in viral load, humoral or cellular immune response, or in the genetic sequence of the infecting HIV-1 strains.

Macaques infected with live attenuated SIVmac are protected against superinfection via the rectal mucosa
-
of special interest. This reports that vaccination of rhesus macaques with the attenuated simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) strain SIVmacC8 protected animals from protection with rectal challenge with either the pathogenic strain SIVmacJ5 or SHIV/HXB2, a recombinant of SIV and HIV that expresses the HXB2 envelope. SIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes were found in peripheral blood and rectal lymphoid tissues of vaccinated animals.

of special interest. This demonstrates that vaginal inoculation of macaques with the nonpathogenic SHIV 89.6, a recombinant of SIV and HIV, protected them from subsequent vaginal infection with the pathogenic SIV strain SIVmac239. Protection was associated with the presence of SIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes in peripheral blood and SIV-specific antibodies in cervicovaginal secretions.

Induction of vigorous cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses by live attenuated simian immunodeficiency virus
-
of special interest. This shows that immunization with attenuated SIV strains, SIVmac239Δnef or SIVmac239Δ3, results in a vigorous and durable SIV-specific CTL response, which can be detected for more than seven years after infection. CTL responses develop in the first four weeks of infection with either SIVmac239Δnef or SIVmac239Δ3 and appear to precede the onset of full protective immunity.

Evolution of envelope-specific antibody responses in monkeys experimentally infected or immunized with simian immunodeficiency virus and its association with the development of protective immunity
-
of special interest. This paper describes how animals infected with attenuated SIV strains develop changes in SIV-envelope-specific antibody responses over the first six to eight months of infection, as reflected by development of high titer antibodies to native envelope - antibodies that are resistent to dissociation with 8M urea - and changes in the ratio of antibodies to conformational and linear envelope epitopes. As assessed by these criteria, maturation of the antibody response temporally correlates with onset of full protective immunity.
