This reports that vaccination of rhesus macaques with the attenuated simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) strain SIVmacC8 protected animals from protection with rectal challenge with either the pathogenic strain SIVmacJ5 or SHIV/HXB2, a recombinant of SIV and HIV that expresses the HXB2 envelope. • Evolution of envelope-specific antibody responses in monkeys experimentally infected or immunized with simian immunodeficiency virus and its association with the development of protective immunity
    • of special interest. This paper describes how animals infected with attenuated SIV strains develop changes in SIV-envelope-specific antibody responses over the first six to eight months of infection, as reflected by development of high titer antibodies to native envelope - antibodies that are resistent to dissociation with 8M urea - and changes in the ratio of antibodies to conformational and linear envelope epitopes. As assessed by these criteria, maturation of the antibody response temporally correlates with onset of full protective immunity.
