Cell 1997, 88:553-560. The authors studied a human bronchial xenograft model in mice and demonstrated that CF airway secretions exhibit a defect in bacterial killing. Antisense oligonucleotides which inhibit expression of human β-defensin-1 block bacterial killing in secretions from non-CF grafts. Expression of CFTR in CF grafts corrected the bacterial killing defect.
