Cystic fibrosis airway epithelia fail to kill bacteria because of abnormal airway surface fluid
-
Smith JJ, Travis SM, Greenberg EP, Welsh MJ: Cystic fibrosis airway epithelia fail to kill bacteria because of abnormal airway surface fluid. Cell 1996, 85:229-236. This in vitro study describes a reversible, salt-sensitive defect in an antibacterial activity from secretions of CF airway epithelial cells. This paper implicates nonspecific host defenses in the pulmonary pathophysiology of CF.

Human beta-defensin-1 is a salt-sensitive antibiotic in lung that is inactivated in cystic fibrosis
-
Goldman MJ, Anderson GM, Stolzenberg ED, Kari UP, Zasloff M, Wilson JM: Human beta-defensin-1 is a salt-sensitive antibiotic in lung that is inactivated in cystic fibrosis. Cell 1997, 88:553-560. The authors studied a human bronchial xenograft model in mice and demonstrated that CF airway secretions exhibit a defect in bacterial killing. Antisense oligonucleotides which inhibit expression of human β-defensin-1 block bacterial killing in secretions from non-CF grafts. Expression of CFTR in CF grafts corrected the bacterial killing defect.
