The equilibrium exhibits an interesting thermochromic behavior which can be qualitatively assessed by visual inspection. Benzene solutions of 9 were purple at room temperature and gradually turned brown upon heating. Cooling the solutions back to room temperature returned the solution to a purple color, as expected.
