40. Immediately after our isolation of carbene 6, we attempted to contact Professor Wanzlick to inform him of the existence of this type of stable structure. We were saddened to learn from colleagues in Berlin that Wanzlick had died before we could reach him. Our work continued without the pleasure of having shared our findings with a central figure in this research. Some years later we would have the opportunity to meet with some of Wanzlick's former co-workers and exchange stories about stable carbenes and "das doppelte Lottchen".
