    • Here, the S. elongatus 7942, which cannot naturally uptake or utilize glycerol, was installed with a glycerol transporter and assimilation pathway that fed into DHAP. To decrease any toxicity due to methylglyoxal, a DHAP byproduct, a triosephosphate isomerase was installed. The synergistic effects of these improvements increased growth by 92% and produced a maximal titer of 761 mg/L, a 3.9-fold increase compared to photoautotrophic production in the same conditions.

    • Optimization of isopropanol production by engineered cyanobacteria with a synthetic metabolic pathway
    • This article follows the previous work in optimizing the pathway from acetyl-CoA to isopropanol, achieving a 6-fold higher production, 146 mg/L. This was accomplished by changing culturing conditions to dark, anaerobic, where acetate accumulates, then light, aerobic, where isopropanol is being produce from the accumulated acetate. During dark conditions acetate accumulates as a byproduct, and during light conditions acetate enables the production of isopropanol, which normally is very limited under light and aerobic environments.

    • A heterologous acetate transporter from E. coli was installed in Synechocystis 6803 to investigate acetate metabolism and the resulting phenotypic growth effects. Acetate supplementation also increased energy abundance through the TCA cycle increasing the biosynthesis of acetyl-CoA derived metabolites, especially when photosynthetic activity was limited.

    • Enhancement of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate production in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 by overexpression of its native biosynthetic genes
    • Two native β-ketothiolases in Synechocystis 6803 were overexpressed and the strain was cultured in nitrogen-deprived media, resulting in 26% PHB DCW, a 2-fold increase in accumulation. Acetate, which has been demonstrated previously to aid in PHB production, was supplemented into the cultures, resulting in 35% DCM PHB. This was a 1.3-fold over photoautotrophic conditions.

    • Engineered xylose utilization enhances bio-products productivity in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803
    • In this work Synechocystis 6803 was engineered to consume xylose as a sole carbon source by installing a xylose transporter and two xylose-metabolizing enzymes from E. coli. Under photomixotrophic conditions 11.3 mL/L of ethylene was produced, a 25% increase compared to auxotrophic growth. Pyruvate and keto-acid production was also boosted when consuming xylose, nearly 50% of the supplemented xylose contributing to their synthesis.
