The beneficial effect of water is probably twofold: from one hand it is due to the formation of the hydroxyl anions which are responsible for the activation of the boronic acid, from the other the favorable action of water is related to the possibility of dissolving and removing ionic by-products (e.g. halide ions and boric acid salts) from the catalytic active sites of Pd catalyst
