    • For instance, we have found that under x-ray irradiation the MgO(100) without SONDs emits red light, while those with SONDs emit violet light. This is most likely due to quantum confinement effect. A detailed investigation of this photoluminescence property and the related photoabsorption feature vs the ND size is underway
