The distribution of active force generators controls mitotic spindle position
-
This study uses laser ablation of the central spindle to allow migration of centrosomes toward the cortex, which provides a biophysical measure of the force generation acting on the mitotic spindle during the first asymmetric cell division in the C. elegans zygote. This technique is then used to show that Gα is required for generating asymmetric pulling forces.

The Par complex directs asymmetric cell division by phosphorylating the cytoskeletal protein Lgl

Unequal segregation of Neuralized biases Notch activation during asymmetric cell division
-
In this study, both the ubiquitin ligase Neuralized and Numb are shown to be asymmetrically localized during sensory organ precursor cell mitosis. The authors show that Neuralized, once segregated to the daughter cell, alters Delta trafficking by increasing Delta internalization, which activates Notch signaling non-autonomously in its sister cell.

In vivo time-lapse imaging of cell divisions during neurogenesis in the developing zebrafish retina

An in vivo imaging analysis of cell division orientations of retinal precursor cells in zebrafish. This study shows that retinal precursors do not undergo apical basal divisions, but rather switch division plane between two orientations along the planar axis, suggesting that asymmetric cell division may occur by regulating planar divisions.
