Dynamic changes in N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors after closed head injury in mice: Implications for treatment of neurological and cognitive deficits

Biegon A, Fry PA, Paden CM, et al. Dynamic changes in N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors after closed head injury in mice: Implications for treatment of neurological and cognitive deficits. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2004; 101:5117-5122. This extremely important study demonstrated that increases in the neurotransmitter glutamate after brain injury (thought to mediate delayed neuronal death) are only transitory and followed by a sustained decrease. The authors propose that stimulation of NMDA receptors may help to preserve cognitive function.
