The first fMRI study to demonstrate that reading of words and pseudowords causes differential activation in a distributed set of brain areas that are associated with semantics and phonology, respectively. This has implications for cognitive models of reading and neuropsychological studies of patients with acquired dyslexia.

The proposal is that experience with written words drives changes in the functional architecture of the left fusiform gyrus.

    • Turkeltaub PE, Gareau L, Flowers DL, Zeffiro TA, Eden GF: Development of neural mechanisms for reading. Nat Neurosci 2003, 6:767-773. This fMRI study shows the influence of behavioural measures on 'implicit' reading activation in subjects from age 6 to age 22. Learning to read was associated with: increased activation in left middle temporal and inferior frontal gyri and decreased activation in right infero-temporal areas. Maturation of phonological processing abilities determined left posterior superior temporal activation.

This fMRI study demonstrates that abnormal brain activation in adult developmental dyslexia is influenced by IQ, and that additional brain systems are observed in dyslexies with improved reading but not those who have persistent reading difficulties. Larger vocabulary and better reasoning skills may be used to decipher new words.

This is the largest fMRI study of reading intervention in children. It indicates that the nature of the remedial educational intervention is crucial to successful outcomes in children with reading disabilities. It argues for a phonologically based intervention for the development of fast-paced neural systems that underlie skilled reading.
