A comparison of the outcomes summarized in Schemes 1 and 2 indicated that the length of the tether between the crown ether and the tetracationic cyclophane is a key parameter in determining the results of the template-directed cyclization. The longer and more flexible linker (Scheme 1) favors pretzelane formation.
