19. The term "daisy chain" is defined in Webster's Third New International Dictionary (Ed.: P. Babcock-Gove), Merrian-Webster, Springfield MA, 1993, as "a string of daisies with stems linked to form a chain, ... such a chain carried by chosen students at a class day or other celebration in some women's colleges." A daisy chain may be acyclic [a] - that is, linear, as shown in Figure 1 - or it may have its ends linked together to afford a cyclic [c] assembly; thus, a [c]daisy chain resembles a necklace. In the molecular world, an [a]daisy chain has a free pair of potentially matching recognition sites, whereas a [c]daisy chain experiences maximal occupancy of its recognition sites (see ref. [4], pp. 182-183), following the closure of an [a]daisy chain using its last pair of complementary recognition sites located at the termini of the growing chain.
