    • 6-gelatin systems such as the one we studied causes a dramatic decrease of the diffusion coefficients of ions and/or water moving through the precipitation zones (see ref 16). Importantly, in the array of squares discussed in the text, precipitation along the horizontal and vertical lines (buckles) obstructs diffusion between the central and clear-line regions. This effect was verified experimentally by applying dye solutions into the swollen gel: while the dye diffused rapidly in the regions between the buckles, its diffusion through the buckles was much slower.
