Bernasconi NL, Traggiai E, Lanzavecchia A: Maintenance of serological memory by polyclonal activation of human memory B cells. Science 2002, 298:2199-2202. Generation of antitumor immunity by cytotoxic T lymphocyte epitope peptide vaccination, CpG-oligodeoxynucleotide adjuvant, and CTLA-4 blockade
-
Davila E, Kennedy R, Celis E: Generation of antitumor immunity by cytotoxic T lymphocyte epitope peptide vaccination, CpG-oligodeoxynucleotide adjuvant, and CTLA-4 blockade. Cancer Res 2003, 63:3281-3288. Synthetic peptide mimicking a tumor antigen and CpG DNA induced tumor regression more effectively when inhibitory CTLA-4 signals were blocked. This approach was not effective prophylactically, suggesting a need for an abundant source of tumor antigen.

Effective induction of CD8+ T-cell response using CpG oligodeoxynucleotides and HER-2/neu-derived peptide co-encapsulated in liposomes
-
Li WM, Dragowska WH, Bally MB, et al.: Effective induction of CD8+ T-cell response using CpG oligodeoxynucleotides and HER-2/neu-derived peptide co-encapsulated in liposomes. Vaccine 2003, 21:3319-3329. Keeping antigen and CpG DNA together may enhance the effect, and liposomal encapsulation of a Her-2/neu peptide with CpG DNA appeared to be better than vaccination without encapsulation. The mechanism of delivery of effective agents may be very important in vaccination strategies.

Combined dendritic cell- and CpG oligonucleotide-based immune therapy cures large murine tumors that resist chemotherapy
-
Heckelsmiller K, Beck S, Rall K, et al.: Combined dendritic cell- and CpG oligonucleotide-based immune therapy cures large murine tumors that resist chemotherapy. Eur J Immunol 2002, 32:3235-3245. Peritumoral injections of CpG DNA combined with CpG-stimulated, antigen-pulsed DC at a distant site enabled the immune system to reject established tumors by inducing a tumor-specific CD8+ T-cell response.
