Multiple forms of synaptic plasticity triggered by selective suppression of activity in individual neurons
-
This study used the inwardly rectifying potassium channel Kir2.1 to reduce activity selectively in single neurons in a network of normally active hippocampal neurons in culture. When activity was reduced before synapse formation, there was a competitive loss of synaptic inputs to the less active neuron. By contrast, when activity was reduced after most synapses had formed, there was a homeostatic increase in synaptic input

Tsien RW: Alpha- and beta CaMKII. Inverse regulation by neuronal activity and opposing effects on synaptic strength
-
This study shows that the ratio of the α to β isoforms of CaMKII is tightly regulated by activity. A chronic decrease in activity resulted in an increase in the α/β ratio and a homeostatic increase in synaptic input, seen mainly as an increase in mEPSC frequency. The opposite was true when activity was increased. These results, coupled to overexpression experiments of each isoform in individual neurons, show that the CaMKII α/β ratio is important for homeostatic plasticity

Inactivity produces increases in neurotransmitter release and synapse size
-
This study in cultured hippocampal neurons demonstrated that chronic suppression of activity leads to an increase in the size of the synapse and its components, measured using electron microscopy. These changes were accompanied by an increase in presynaptic efficacy. Although postsynaptic function was not assayed, other studies have suggested an increase in the quantal amplitude.

Homeostatic control of presynaptic release is triggered by postsynaptic membrane depolarization
-
This elegant study showed that homeostatic plasticity at the fly neuromuscular junction could be induced by silencing muscle fibers with the inwardly rectifying potassium channel, Kir2.1. Even though the muscle could not fire any action potentials, synaptic depolarization was similar to that in the wild type. This form of homeostatic plasticity was a result of an increase in presynaptic release, with no change in quantal size

Critical periods for experience-dependent synaptic scaling in visual cortex
-
This study provides strong evidence for homeostatic synaptic plasticity during development in the brain. Spanning the period of marked synaptogenesis in the visual cortex (postnatal day 12-23), there is an increase in mEPSC frequency accompanied by a compensatory decrease in mEPSC amplitude. This reduction in quantal size was prevented by dark rearing or monocular deprivation, which demonstrates that homeostatic plasticity does indeed take place in the developing brain

Synaptic transmission in the auditory brainstem of normal and congenitally deaf mice
-
The authors used congenitally deaf mice to study the effects of sensory depravation on synaptic transmission at the first synapse made by the auditory nerve fibers in the brain stem. Deaf mice show a large increase in evoked AMPA and NMDA glutamate excitatory postsynaptic currents, which can be explained by an increase in presynaptic release probability
