This study clearly describes a typical example of receptor-mediated redundancy associated with cytokine behavior. IL-23, which shares its p40 subunit with IL-12, has been found to be the critical factor in mediating autoimmune inflammation of the brain. The other important finding of this paper is that, unlike IL-12, IL-23 acts an end-stage effector cytokine and has direct activity on memory T cells.

Interestingly, IL-4 could still evoke all Th2 effector functions even in the combined absence of other key Th2 cytokines. This study clearly shows the pivotal role played by IL-4 in modulating Th2 effector function.
