EMBO Rep 2001, 2:850-857. Using neuronal Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP)-defective cell lines, this paper demonstrates that N-WASP is required for actin pedestal formation by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). This work also indicates that recruitment of N-WASP to EPEC pedestals depends on its WH1 domain and not its GTPase-binding domain or its proline-rich domain, suggesting that Nck may indirectly recruit N-WASP to pedestals.

This paper compares the host protein composition of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7 (EHEC) pedestals. It reveals that EPEC recruits the adaptor proteins Grb2 and CrkII to sites of pedestal formation, but EHEC does not.

Cell Microbiol 2001, 3:499-510. This paper provides the first evidence that enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7 Tir is defective for actin signaling when expressed in entero-pathogenic E. coli, suggesting that the mechanisms of actin signaling by the two pathogens are distinct.
