Reproduction of human fibrous dysplasia of bone in immunocompromised mice by transplanted mosaics of normal and Gsα-mutated skeletal progenitor cells
-
12 Bianco P, Kuznetsov SA, Riminucci M, Fisher LW, Spiegel AM, Robey PG: Reproduction of human fibrous dysplasia of bone in immunocompromised mice by transplanted mosaics of normal and Gsα-mutated skeletal progenitor cells. J Clin Invest 1998, 101:1737-1744. This important paper describes the development of the first in vivo model system to study the bone biology, pathology, and treatment of fibrous dysplasia. The use of clonal skeletal progenitor cells is likely to have broad applications for the study of human bone disease.

Long-term effects of intravenous pamidronate in fibrous dysplasia of bone
-
49 Chapurlat RD, Delmas PD, Liens D, Meunier PJ: Long-term effects of intravenous pamidronate in fibrous dysplasia of bone. J Bone Miner Res 1997, 12:1746-1752. This is the best study to date on the medical treatment of FD with a bisphosphonate. Results represent an extension of the promising findings reported earlier by this group (Lancet 1994, 343:953-954).

Fibrous dysplasia of bone in the McCune-Albright syndrome: Abnormalities in bone formation
-
62 Riminucci M, Fisher LW, Shenker A, Spiegel AM, Bianco P, Robey PG: Fibrous dysplasia of bone in the McCune-Albright syndrome: abnormalities in bone formation. Am J Pathol 1997, 151:1587-1600. The authors use histological, histochemical, immunochemical, and in situ hybridization methods to study the properties of bone specimens from six MAS patients. Dysplastic bone is found to contain an abnormal complement of bone matrix proteins and osteoblasts exhibit a retracted shape that may be related to excess cAMP production.

Sα is associated with an increased phosphodiesterase activity in human growth hormone-secreting adenomas
-
Sα in somatotroph adenomas are associated with increased phosphodiesterase activity. These data are consistent with those obtained in transfected cells, and suggest that the in vivo phenotype of gsp mutant cells may be modified by increased cAMP degradation and other counterregulatory pathways.
