Differential signaling via the same axon of neocortical pyramidal neurons
-
Reports that during repetitive activation of an individual nerve cell, the synaptic effects exerted in its target cells may differ. The authors made multiple intracellular recordings in neocortical pyramidal neurons and found activity-dependent facilitation of synaptic transmission at one synapse, but depression at a different synapse. Thus, it appears that the property of a given synaptic terminal depends on the type of target cell innervated.

Different proctolin neurons elicit distinct motor patterns from a multifunctional neuronal network
-
The stomatogastric network is subject to a rich variety of peptidergic control mechanisms. It is shown here that different modulatory neurons exert different specific effects on the network motor pattern. When a given modulator neuron is recruited, it will thus modify the motor pattern in a reproducible way.

Activity-dependent metaplasticity of inhibitory and excitatory synaptic transmission in the lamprey spinal cord locomotor network
-
A short lasting application of tachykinins (10 min) causes a long lasting potentiation (24 h) of locomotor network activity in the lamprey. Inhibitory and excitatory pre-motor interneurones exhibit activity-dependent facilitation or depression of synaptic transmission to motorneurones. Tachykinins and 5-HT both profoundly modify this activity dependence, thus exerting a metaplastic effect.
