    • Temporal dynamics of graded synaptic transmission in the lobster stomatogastric ganglion
    • of outstanding interest. This elegant study (described in detail in the text) uses voltage-clamp waveforms that very closely approximate natural activity to explore the transfer function at the graded inhibitory synapse between the LP and PD neurons of lobster stomatogastric ganglion. The effects of cycle frequency and duty cycle were then explored thoroughly; as a consequence, the dynamics of transfer at this synapse are certainly amongst the best characterized of any graded synapse. The results show clearly that the dynamics of the synapse are such that it is at least partially depressed at all cycle frequencies and duty cycles in the physiological range. The authors emphasize the importance of incorporating synaptic dynamics into models of pattern-generating networks that have significant graded synaptic transmission.

    • Dopamine modulates graded and spike mediate-evoked synaptic inhibition independently at single synapses in pyloric network of lobster
    • of outstanding interest. This is the latest in a series of excellent papers from the Harris-Warrick laboratory that explore the modulation of graded synaptic inhibition by amines in the pyloric network of lobster stomatogastric ganglion. The surprising result (described in detail in the text) is that while dopamine up-modulates graded synaptic inhibition between the LP and PD neurons, it causes a reduction of spike-mediated synaptic inhibition from the LP neuron to the PD neuron. The effects of dopamine on both spike-mediated and graded inhibitory transmission from LP to other postsynaptic targets in the ganglion were also explored. The results demonstrate that spike-mediated and graded synaptic transmission are modulated independently in this network.

    • Frequency regulation of a slow rhythm by a fast rhythm
    • of outstanding interest. This study (described in detail in the text) demonstrates the power of modeling in the analysis of complex circuit interactions. The authors present a model that accounts for an MCN1-evoked gastric rhythm and its periodic gating by the faster pyloric rhythm in the crustacean stomatogastric nervous system. The model predicts that the periodic gating by the pyloric rhythm increases the frequency of the gastric pattern generator (slow) and produces the fixed latency between the AB phase of the pyloric rhythm and the LG phase of the gastric rhythm that is observed experimentally.
