Reversible polymers formed from self-complementary monomers using quadruple hydrogen bonding
-
This article describes monomers bearing strongly hydrogen-bonded end groups and their use in the formation of self-assembling polymer systems. Linear polymers and reversible networks were formed from monomers with two and three binding sites, respectively. The thermal and environmental control over lifetime and bond strength can result in materials with properties not available to conventional polymers

Self-organization of a heteroditopic molecule to linear polymolecular arrays in solution
-
Supramolecular pseudo-rotaxane architectures are shown to be produced by the self-assembly of an 'A-B' (i.e. heteroditopic) monomer involving crown ether and paraquat segments. Polymer-like properties are demonstrated for concentrated solutions while small-molecule behavior is observed in the dilute regime

Sergeants-and-soldiers principle in chiral columnar stacks of disc-shaped molecules with C-3 symmetry

An intermolecular variant of the sergeants and soldiers principle was cleverly applied to elucidate the association strength and cooperativity of extended-core discs that stacked into chiral columns in dilute solution. These chiral columns can be considered as a type of supramolecular polymer that formed by the self-organization of extended-core discs

Supramolecular materials: Self-organized nanostructures

This paper reports on the self-organization of a miniature triblock rodcoil molecule into supramolecular assemblies that lack a center of inversion. The resulting mushroom like nanostructures are about 200 kDa in size and their formation is believed to be mediated by attractive interactions between rods and repulsive interactions between the coiled segments

Structural analysis of cylindrical and spherical supramolecular dendrimers quantifies the concept of monodendrons shape control by generation number

W-D C., This paper reports on an impressive exploration of dendritic structures that self-assemble into cylindrical and spherical supramolecular objects that in turn self-organize into hexagonal and cubic mesophases. Monodendron size and shape as governed by variations in generation and terminal group substitution are the main determinants of supramolecular sphere vs. cylinder assembly

Solvophobically driven folding of nonbiological oligomers
-
Rigid, non-polar phenylene ethynylene oligomer backbones bearing polar side chains are shown to undergo conformational ordering into a helical state above a critical chain length. This reversible helix-coil conformational transition is driven by solvophobic forces alone, and the stability of the helical structure is shown to depend on solvent composition and temperature
