Comparison of most probable peak values as measured for polymer distributions by MALDI mass spectrometry and by size exclusion chromatography
-
Jackson C, Larsen B, McEwen C: Comparison of most probable peak values as measured for polymer distributions by MALDI mass spectrometry and by size exclusion chromatography. Anal Chem 1996, 68:1303-1308. The most probable peak values determined by MALDI (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization) only agree well with size exclusion chromatography measurements for polymers of narrow polydispersity. This paper addresses this relationship in detail, and provides recommendations for reporting polymer MALDI data.

-
Fréchet JMJ, Henmi M, Gitsov I, Aoshima S, Leduc MR, Grubbs RB: Self-condensing vinyl polymerization - an approach to dendritic materials. Science 1995, 269:1080-1083. Self-condensing vinyl polymerization was described for the first time as a means to produce polymers having highly branched structures and numerous reactive groups. A vinyl monomer will undergo self-polymerization if it contains a pendant group that can be transformed into an initiator by the action of an external reagent.

Detailed structural characterization of multilayers of tri-O-isopentylcellulose fabricated by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique reveals that very perfect and homogeneously oriented multilayers (monodomain-like overall film quality) can be obtained from hairy rod macromolecules. A new soluble poly(p-phenylene) with tetrahydropyrene repeating units
-
Kreyenschmidt M, Uckert F, Mullen K: A new soluble poly(p-phenylene) with tetrahydropyrene repeating units. Macromolecules 1995, 28:4577-4582. This article describes the first poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) based on tetrahydropyrene repeating units. By contrast with other PPPs, the solubilizing alkyl substituents do not induce torsion about the aryl-aryl single bonds. The fluorescence spectrum measured in THF solution shows an emission maximum at 425 nm, while for the film, the maximum is shifted to 457 nm. The above characteristics qualify the new PPP as an attractive material for use in light-emitting diodes.

Zimmerman SC, Zeng FW, Reichert DEC, Kolotuchin SV: Self-assembling dendrimers. Science 1996, 271:1095-1098. Hydrogen bond-mediated self-assembly was shown to be a powerful strategy for generating large structures from dendrimeric subunits. The largest of these hydrogen-bonded macromolecular assemblies is roughly disk shaped with a size comparable to that of small proteins (34 KDa).

Thermoreverslble supramolecular networks with polymeric properties
-
St Pourcain CB, Griffin AC: Thermoreverslble supramolecular networks with polymeric properties. Macromolecules 1995, 28:4116-4121. Complexation between diacids and a tetrapyridyl species can be used as a means of producing network structures, as demonstrated by this work; however, the reversibility of hydrogen bond formation does not allow the network to persist at high temperatures. Consequently, the complexes have properties typical of low molecular mass materials at high temperatures but exhibit polymeric properties at low temperatures.

Complex phase behavior in solvent-free nonionic surfactants
-
Hillmyer MA, Bates FS, Almdal K, Mortensen K, Ryan AJ, Fairclough JPA: Complex phase behavior in solvent-free nonionic surfactants. Science 1996, 271:976-978. The phase behavior of unsolvated block copolymers of polyethyleneoxide - polyethylethylene was shown to resemble that of both higher molecular weight block copolymers and lower molecular weight nonionic surfactant solutions. Two of the block copolymers exhibited thermally induced order→border transitions that result as a consequence of nearly ideal matching of lattice spacings. Such behavior highlights the importance of epitaxy and molecular conformation in the phase transformations of soft materials.

Stupp SI, Huggins KE, Li LS, Radzilowski LH, Keser M, Lebonheur V, Son S: Self assembly of molecular materials. In Modular Chemistry. Edited by Michl J. Dordrecht: Kluwer; 1996:in press. As shown in this article, nanostructures of uniform shape and dimension can be obtained by self-organization of block molecules and polymerizable chiral compounds. The strategy described is useful for preparing nanostructures having supramolecular molar masses which extend beyond those of compounds accessible by conventional organic chemistry. One of these materials exhibited spontaneous polar ordering, suggesting that many useful properties might be accessible by this route.

Chiral assembly in amorphous ABC triblock copolymers - Formation of a helical morphology in polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymers
-
Krappe U, Stadler R, Voigtmartin I: Chiral assembly in amorphous ABC triblock copolymers - formation of a helical morphology in polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymers. Macromolecules 1995, 28:4558-4561. Microphase separation in a linear ternary block copolymer consisting of three immiscible components was shown to self-organize into a chiral supramolecular assembly. Interestingly, the chirality is not defined on a molecular (or macromolecular) level but only by the assembly of the linear triblock copolymer molecules. The structure consists of a polybutadiene midblock which forms helical strands surrounding polystyrene segments which are embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix. This chiral mesoscopic assembly is controlled by the relative incompatibilities of the three polymeric components in the block copolymer.

Korner H, Shiota A, Bunning TJ, Ober CK: Orientatton-on-demand thin films - curing of liquid crystalline networks in ac electric fields. Science 1996, 272:252-255. Cured network structures could be selectively oriented either parallel or perpendicular to a film substrate by varying the frequency of the alternating electric field.

Supramolecular second-order nonlinearity of polymers with orientationally correlated chromophores

Kauranen M, Verbiest T, Boutton C, Teerenstra MN, Clays K, Schouten AJ, Nolte RJM, Persoons A: Supramolecular second-order nonlinearity of polymers with orientationally correlated chromophores. Science 1995, 270:966-969. This article introduced a design principle for enhancing macroscopic NLO susceptibilities in polymeric materials. NLO chromophores were organized as orientationally correlated side groups by fixing them to a rigid backbone. Electric field induced second-harmonic generation measurements confirmed that the product of the permanent dipole moment and the first hyperpolarizability was enhanced for the polymer structure.

Rigid-rod-like main chain polymers with rigidly attached chromophores - A novel structural concept for electrooptical materials .1. Synthesis and characterization
-
Heldmann C, Schulze M, Wegner G: Rigid-rod-like main chain polymers with rigidly attached chromophores - a novel structural concept for electrooptical materials .1. Synthesis and characterization. Macromolecules 1996, 29:4686-4696. This paper describes a structural concept for NLO polymeric materials optimized for long-term stability of the polar order. Chromophores are rigidly attached to the rod-like chains, normal to the direction of the polymer backbone. This geometry restricts the NLO-active chromophores to a disk-shaped volume segment around the stiff main chain. The layered structure formed in films of these polymers improves the long-term stability of polar order induced by electric fields.
