The work discussed in this paper is exciting for a variety of reasons. First, it extends the elegant studies undertaken by this group on the role of various genes for regulation of pathogenicity in vivo. Second, it raises a very interesting possibility of a Salmonella mutant that has all the correct attributes for a successful vaccine delivery system.

This is a beautiful piece of work showing the structure of the type III secretion system used by S. typhimurium

This offers a good overview that is not too long for those interested in learning more about the type III secretion systems used in a variety of enteric and foodborne bacteria.

24. Smith KE, Besser JM, Hedberg CW, Leano FT, Bender JB, Wicklund JH, et al.: Quinolone-resistant Campylobacter jejuni infections in Minnesota, 1992-1998. N Engl J Med 1999, 340:1525-1532. The emergence of antibiotic resistance in foodborne pathogens is of major concern. This paper nicely documents the trends with regard to quinolone resistance in C. jejuni over a 7-year period. It emphasizes the impending situation in which the drugs we routinely use to treat foodborne bacterial infections will no longer be effective.

32. Nataro JP, Kaper JB: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli. Clin Microbiol Rev 1998, 11:142-201. Nataro and Kaper have written a thorough analysis of diarrheagenic E. coli. They have divided their discussion into the five major types of E. coli, ie, enterotoxigenic, enteropathogenic, enterohemorrhagic, enteroaggregative, and enteroinvasive. Within each section they review the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and diagnosis unique and essential to the specific type.
33. Kaper JB, O'Brien AD (eds): Escherichia coli O157:H7 and other Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strains, Washington, DC: ASM Press; 1998. This book represents the work presented at the 3rd International Symposium and Workshop on "Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli Infections" (VTEC '97, Baltimore, June 22-26, 1997). It is the definitive source on E. coli O157:H7 as well as other STEC strains and reveals the diversity of disciplines involved in the study of these organisms. The epidemiology of STEC in humans and in food, bacterial, and host factors of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment including vaccine development are included in this single volume.

The phenomenon of acid-resistant E. coli is investigated in this paper. In this context the authors raise the interesting possibility that feeding cattle a diet of hay prior to slaughter will diminish the virulence of E. coli O157:H7. Although this possibility is fascinating, more work must be done before such a strategy could be considered a viable approach.

In a series of experiments these authors documented the effects of sublethal concentrations of the quinolone norfloxacin on Shiga toxin production from E. coli O157:H7. They demonstrated induction of prophage with subsequent increase in toxin gene copy number and a significant increase in toxin. This study illustrates the potential dangers of using quinolones to treat O157:H7 infection.
